Understanding Tyre Pressure Units
PSI (Pounds per Square Inch)
The most common unit in the UK and US. Most tyre pressure gauges display PSI, and manufacturer recommendations are typically given in PSI. A typical car tyre pressure is between 30-35 PSI.
Bar
Commonly used across Europe. 1 Bar is approximately equal to atmospheric pressure at sea level. Most European cars display recommended pressures in Bar (typically 2.0-2.5 Bar).
kPa (Kilopascal)
The SI (International System) unit for pressure. Used in some countries and technical specifications. 1 kPa = 0.145 PSI. Typical car tyre pressure is around 220-240 kPa.
💡 Pro Tip
Always check your tyre pressure when tyres are cold (before driving or after the car has been stationary for at least 3 hours). Driving heats up tyres and increases pressure readings.
